Set to Paul Hindemith’s score, Balanchine created The Four Temperaments as a witty and ingenious exploration of the ancient belief that personality is determined by the body’s balance of the four humors – Melancholic, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Choleric. Each temperament (or quadrant) was associated with one of the four classical elements (earth, air, water, and fire), which in turn were the basis of the four humors that composed the body. Time Magazine calls this “the best dance of the twentieth century”.

Based on the most-documented ghost story in America, The Bell Witch brings the Tennessee legend to life in celebration of Halloween. With Conni Ellisor’s original American folk score setting the tone, you are encouraged to investigate why and how the Bell Witch haunted the Bell family in Adams, Tennessee, during the mid 1800s.  Choreographer DeAngelo states, “The music and the story are interwoven as Conni and I collaborated to create this ballet. I used classical ballet, modern, and hip-hop movement as the words to narrate this tale of a supernatural force. Although it is a ghost story, it is not scary.” Another fun aspect for the audience is wearing 3-D glasses to maximize the special visual effects.

Choreography Paul Vasterling
Music Carl Orff

When German composer Carl Orff set these lusty thirteenth century verses to song, little could he suspect that Carmina Burana would live on through countless television commercials, film scores, and concert performances around the globe.

The music is so colossal, in fact, that in Artistic Director Paul Vasterling’s masterful new production, the acclaimed 200-voice Belmont University Oratorio Chorus and the magnificent Nashville Symphony share the stage with our dancers and spill into the audience. This is too big to miss!

The Golden Cage

Choreography Paul Vasterling
Music Ludwig van Beethoven

How were women regarded in nineteenth century society? Paul Vasterling’s romantic, haunting, classically flavored ballet, performed to Beethoven, provides thoughtful reflection! Violinist Christian Teal and pianist Craig Nies bring this beautiful music to life.

Nashville Ballet is proud to announce the premiere of a brand-new production of Nutcracker. This original production will replace the old Nutcracker that has delighted thousands of Middle Tennessee residents for over 18 years. The new version will be set during the time of the 1897 Tennessee Exposition, and the audience will recognize many local influences, such as the Parthenon and Shelby Bottoms Pond. Clara’s home is based on the interior of the Belle Meade Mansion, and many historical figures and families have been included.
